On the evening of January 24, 1971, at  8:15 P.M. the North Penn Hospital lost its pharmacy in a fire that raged through the third floor and loft of the medical center's original building. The building was constructed in 1888 as a private residence and converted for use as part of the old Elm Terrace Hospital. The estimate on the loss was set at $100.000. The cause of the fire was an electrical short in a BX wire in the loft area of the building.
